Emergency Full IT System Outage - Thursday, November 5, 7:45 pm to 10:15 pm

There will be a full IT system outage on Thursday, November 5, beginning at 7:45 pm and lasting approximately 2.5 hours.  This outage is to perform emergency maintenance addressing recent power issues that have been affecting our data center.  Access to all university systems and the Internet will be unavailable during this time.

We appreciate your understanding and have provided details about this emergency maintenance below.

The recent issues have been caused by:

·         ComEd power supply interruptions

·         Battery backup system failure

Steps being taken to remedy the problem:

·         Reengineer all electrical supply pathways

·         Upgrade surge suppression

·         Improve generator failover protection

·         New battery backup system

Timeline of work:

·         Thursday, November 5 – Daytime (no outage required)

o   Preparation of new battery backup unit

o   Installation of new cabling and electrical hardware

o   Installation of improved surge suppression devices

·         Thursday, November 5 – 7:45 pm to 10:15 pm (full network outage)

o   Power down data center equipment and shut down power feed

o   Installation of electrical feed bypass and upgrade circuits

o   Restore power feed to data center

o   Power up data center equipment

·         Friday, November 6 (No outage required)

o   Installation of new battery backup unit

o   Switch data center to new battery backup unit
