The Network Services team is the technology infrastructure support division for the
Office of Information Technology. We develop, implement and support critical infrastructure
such as the data center, the data network and the telephone wiring system that are used
by the Olivet Nazarene University community.
Student Computers on the Network
Each residence hall room contains two network connections. Network software can be
provided by Information Technology at the time your PC is connected. All other hardware
and software necessary to run the PC must be purchased by the student.
To connect your personal computer to the network:
- Your computer configuration should meet a set of recommended standards that were provided for you
when you started at Olivet.
- There MUST be a network card installed in your computer before it can be
setup for the network.
- You must have your own network cable. If you do not, you can purchase one
from the campus bookstore. Please note that a normal phone cord or modem cord
will not work in place of a network cable.
- When you hook your computer up in your room, be sure your network
cable is plugged into the grey DATA jack.
Student Services Calls
- We first attempt to resolve a problem over the phone.
- If it requires further attention, we will schedule a time for a technician to visit the student's room.
- Because men are not allowed in the women's dorms until afternoon, service calls to women's dorms
cannot be scheduled until after the lunch hour.
- NOTE: We do not service hardware problems.
Remote Access
Application Launcher
There is an application launcher on lab pc desktops named either
"Application Explorer" or "Network and Internet Programs." It contains programs
that can be run based on your username. Open the application launcher and
select "All" to display all programs. Clicking on one of those programs will
install it.
The application launcher enables users to install software at their convenience.
The process is simple and does not require help from an IT technician.
This software can also be used on your personal pc in your residence hall, but
requires additional software to be installed. Contact Information Technology
if this interests you.
Security
Passwords
- Passwords are an important part of the security of our network and
your data.
- Don't use passwords that would be easily guessed by others such as
family names or your favorite team.
- Don't write passwords down and leave them near your computer.
Context
The network is divided into different containers or contexts for a variety of reasons
and each one of these parts contains user accounts. If a user attempts to login
to a station that is set to a different context than what they are assigned to, the
login will fail.
Student accounts are located in the student.onunet context.
The following chart shows which context a particular group of faculty or staff belong to:
