Wireless is the next generation of computing. No longer do you need to search for a
network jack to access ONUnet network. Mobility and flexibility are key to your
education at Olivet. You can access the network anywhere (except in Chalfant during
chapel). You now have the ability to conduct online research, write papers, and
communicate from anywhere on the campus using your laptop or PDA.
Wireless networking gives users the ability to roam around Olivet's campus without
being tethered to a wire. The wireless network uses radio waves in place of a wired
connection. This allows portable computers and Personal Digital Assistants (PDA's) to
connect anywhere on campus.
Olivet's wireless network uses devices known as access points to convert the radio
waves into wired signals to communicate with the rest of the ONUnet. These WiFi
compliant devices can communicate over 802.11 a, 802.11b and 802.11g.
A wireless adapter installed in your laptop or PDA is needed to connect to the wireless
network. Typically the 802.11a and b standards allow communication to these access
points at speeds up to 54 Mbs (Megabits per second). The 802.11b standard allows
connection speeds up to 11 Mbs.
