12/14/2004 - Internet Connectivity Issues Being Resolved
Issues were discovered early yesterday morning that contributed to the fluctuating internet connectivity over the last two weeks. Connectivity to Blackboard and Webmail from sources outside the Olivet network was affected by this problem and has also been resolved. A number of student computers were discovered to have been infected with viruses and spyware, and were generating massive amounts of traffic over the network. As this traffic progressed through the network, it clogged the devices controlling internet access, forcing everyone else to wait while it tried to pass all of the malicious traffic. Currently most of this traffic is being blocked successfully, and normal traffic flow is improving dramatically. The students that own these infected PCs will be contacted by IT and asked to have the viruses and spyware removed by the beginning of next semester. After the beginning of the semester, any PC found to still be generating this traffic will be quarantined from communicating on the network until it can be verified that the PC has been successfully cleaned.
