5/18/207 - Automated Computer Maintenance
In order to keep the University computers running smoothly, we are implementing an automated maintenance process to refresh your computer daily. The goal of this process is to keep the computers clean, secure, and virus-free.
Every morning at 2:00 A.M., all faculty and staff computers will reboot and begin several update/cleanup processes including a virus scan, Checkdisk, Disk Defragmenter, a check for Windows updates, and deletion of temporary files. These processes will all run automatically and should be completed by the time you arrive for work in the morning.
We strongly recommend that you save your work, log out of any programs, and shut down your computer before going home every night. Your computer will reboot at 2:00 A.M. regardless of whether you are still logged in or not.
This process will not update or change any of your installed programs. Upgrades to your operating system, Office 2007, and Internet Explorer, for example, will be performed by the Information Technology department as noted in the story posted on April 28, 2007. This new automated process will run Windows patches and updates, but will not upgrade Windows to the new Vista version.
Below are answers to some questions you may have regarding this process.
- Q. Will this maintenance process run on...
- ...student workstations in my department?
No. ...computers in the labs? No. ...main floor library computers? No. ...print stations? No. ...public stations like Common Grounds & Weber lounge? No. ...special-use stations in my department? Possibly. Contact IT to confirm.
Q. Will it install all Windows updates, or only the critical updates? A. It will install all Windows updates except driver updates.
Q. Will it install major updates like Windows Vista? A. No.
Q. What if the PC reaches a point that requires user intervention? A. In the unlikely event that user intervention is required during this process, you may call the Help Desk for instructions.
Q. What if a virus is detected? Will the computer automatically clean it? A. Yes.
Q. How long does it take for the maintenance process to finish? A. The process should take between two and three hours to complete.
Q. What if I come in early and the processes are still running? Do I have to wait until they are done before I can use my computer? A. You may use the computer normally. Any processes still running will work in the background without interruption.
Q. What if I need to work through the night and do not want my computer to reboot and run the processes? A. The reboot will occur after a five-minute countdown. Be sure to save any necessary work. After the reboot and disk error check have completed, you may log in and continue working.
Q. What if I need my computer to stay on all night? A. If any special needs occur, please call the Help Desk to log the request.
