While the use of technology is an important aspect of life here at Olivet, protecting the information accessible with that technology is even more important. You will need to manage multiple accounts in order to make our technology work for you.
It is important that you take the necessary precautions to protect your account information. You should never share your account details with anyone else regardless of how much you may trust them. It is also important that you are aware of a type of scamming called "phishing." This is where someone will try to get you to divulge personal information in an attempt to gain access to any accounts you may have. More information about phishing can be found at http://it.olivet.edu/news/news.cgi?ID=35.
If you ever have any questions about or experience difficulties using any of your accounts, please feel free to contact the IT Help Desk at (815) 939-5302 or toll-free at (866) 400-5302. You can also email us at it@olivet.edu.
Accounts
There are three primary accounts that you have to manage. The same username is used for all three accounts but each account has a different password. Please see the information below for detail on how each password is managed. The accounts are:
- Network/ONUnet/Email — Used for email, wireless authentication, network storage access, campus computer access, off-campus library database access, and other potential network resources.
- Blackboard — Campus portal and used for course management.
- OASIS — Provides access to grades, chapel records, class registration, financial records and payment options, and many other administrative functions and pieces of information.
Username
Usernames are up to eight characters long and normally comprised of the first initial of first name followed by the first seven characters of last name. If the last name does not contain seven characters then the entire last name is used. Nothing is added to make it exactly eight characters long. If the username matches something already in our system, a number is added to the end, or it replaces the last character if the username is already eight characters, to ensure uniqueness.
As an example, if your name is James Smith, your username would be created as "jsmith." If, however, we already have a "jsmith" in our system, your username might be set to "jsmith2" or even "jsmith10" depending on how common the default username combination might be.
Passwords
Network/ONUnet/Email
Upon creation of your account, the password for logging into most network resources was set to a default of last four digits of your Social Security Number followed by the first three characters of your last name. This will be in all lower case.
The default password is set to expire as soon as the account is created. As such, the first time you attempt to log into our email system or a campus computer, you will be prompted to change this password. Your new password must be at least seven characters long and contain at least one number. It is also case sensitive.
This password is set to expire every 90 days. You will receive a prompt to change your password when it has expired. When you have to change this password you cannot set it to a password that has been used previously.
This password can be maintained in two different ways in the event you want to change it before it expires, you have forgotten your password, or your account becomes locked up due to too many unsuccessful login attempts. The options are:
-
Webmail — http://webmail.olivet.edu
This is the site you use to send and receive email. You can also change your ONUnet password here by selecting the "Options" link in the top right corner of the screen and then choosing the Password tab.
Please note that this site will only allow you to change your password upon a successful login. If you have forgotten your password or your account becomes locked up, you will need to use option 2 or contact the IT Help Desk to get your password reset.
-
Changemypassword — http://changemypassword.olivet.edu
This site allows you to change your password, reset your password it you have forgotten it, or unlock your account if needed. There is an "Instructions" link at the top of the screen that describes how to use this site.
One caveat to being able to use this site for ongoing ONUnet password management is that you have to first set up a couple of challenge questions. This site will not work for you until you have completed that step.
Blackboard
Like your ONUnet default password, the default password for Blackboard is set to the last four digits of your Social Security Number followed by the first three characters of your last name. This will be in all lower case.
Unlike your ONUnet password, your Blackboard password does not expire. It will remain as the default password, or whatever you have set it to if you already changed it, until you manually change the password. Once you have logged into Blackboard, you can change your password by selecting the "Personal Information" link on the left side of the screen and then choosing the "Change Password" option. This password is case sensitive.
If you have forgotten your Blackboard password, there is a forgotten password link underneath the login boxes on the main Blackboard screen.
You access Blackboard by going to http://blackboard.olivet.edu.
OASIS
When your OASIS account is first created, there is no default password generated for accessing your account. OASIS makes use a self-service password function for getting an initial password as well as resetting the password in case it is forgotten.
To get/reset your OASIS password, follow these steps:
- Go to OASIS at http://oasis.olivet.edu.
- Select the "What's My Password?" link in the lower right corner of the screen.
- Select the "Reset my password" link. Select this link even if you are getting you OASIS password for the first time.
- Enter your last name and then either your Social Security Number or your Olivet Student ID number then click the "Submit" button.
- Select your Olivet username from the drop-down list then click the "Submit" button.
This process will send a temporary OASIS password to your Olivet email account. It may take up to 15 minutes for the email to come to your account. Once you have received the email with a temporary password, return to the OASIS site and select the "Log In" link in the upper right corner. Enter your username and the temporary password you received. You will then be prompted to enter a new password and also have the opportunity to create a password hint.
This password is set to expire every 90 days. When prompted, you must enter a new password that is between 6 and 9 characters and contains at least one number. This password is case sensitive. If you wish to change your OASIS password before it expires, you can do so by selecting the "Change Password" link after successfully logging into OASIS.
