    Connecting to Network

Upon arriving to campus, you will need to register your computer with Olivet's network (ONUnet) in order to gain access to our network resources and the Internet. Computer registration helps protect both the student and the university and helps make the computing environment here at Olivet safe for everyone.

Requirements

The computer registration process looks for two things: operating system updates and an installed and up-to-date anti-virus program. This is regardless of the operating system (Windows, Mac OS, Linux) you may be running. It is strongly recommended that you update these items right before packing up to leave for campus. This should help expedite the registration process when you arrive.

Connection Options

You can connect to ONUnet with a wired or wireless connection. Each dorm room is equipped with enough network jacks to match the number of students in the room. Wired will generally be a faster connection but you also have the flexibility of taking your computer to the dorm lobby, a classroom, or even outside if you feel the need to roam (or get away from your roommate for a bit) and still be able to get online.

Wired Connection

You will need the following to use a wired connection:

  • 10/100/1000 Network Interface Card — As mentioned on the Computer Requirements page.
  • Ethernet RJ-45 patch cable — A 15-20' cable is recommended as the minimum length to get as the furniture can be moved around but the network jacks cannot. You may want to decide on how your room is going to be arranged before purchasing a patch cable. Cables can be purchased at the Olivet bookstore as well as many local stores such as Wal-Mart, Target, Office Max, Staples, and Best Buy.

In the room you will see a face plate with two or more jacks available. For a wired network connection you need to plug your patch cable into the GRAY jack. The black jack is for our campus phone system and may cause damage to your computer if you attempt to use it as a modem.

Wireless Connection

You will need a wireless Network Interface Card or built-in wireless to connect to our wireless network. Please see the Computer Requirements page for details specifications.

Connecting wirelessly involves the following steps:

  • Ensure your wireless card is turned on and/or enabled. Some laptops have switches that can turn wireless on and off while others use software settings.
  • Connect to the wireless network called "Judah." You may see other networks listed but you should not connect to them.
  • Open a web browser such as Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, or Safari.
  • You should be directed to a black login page. Enter your ONUnet username and password on this page to authenticate to our network.
  • You are now free to roam the Internet.

Registration Process

Regardless of how you connect to ONUnet, the first time you attempt to connect to a web page you will be directed to the computer registration system. If you are not taken there automatically, go to http://registermycomputer.olivet.edu. You will be asked to authenticate yourself using your ONUnet username and password and then be prompted to fill in some information about you and your computer. The final step involves running a scanning agent that looks for the items mentioned in the Requirements section above. On average this scan takes 3-5 minutes to run.

If everything passes on the registration scan then you will be prompted to restart your computer and you should then be able to get online. If something is found to be missing our not up-to-date, you will be presented with that item and a link to follow in order to get the item corrected. Once corrected you can rerun the scanning agent and complete the registration process.

Information Technology staff will be available on move-in days to assist with any connection and registration questions and issues.
