Microsoft Office Suite
In the past, Olivet has been able to provide, at no charge, a copy of the Microsoft Office Suite to all students. Because the expense of doing so has become cost-prohibitive, the decision has been made to discontinue this program and provide a means for students to obtain Microsoft Office, as well as other software products, at a significantly reduced price. Please see the Discounted Software section below for more details on that option.
Through the end of the Fall 2009 semester, students may still obtain a copy of Microsoft Office for both Windows and Mac at no net cost. There is a deposit required which will be returned to the student when the software disc is returned.
The steps for obtaining this software are as follows:
- Go to the cashier’s window in Miller Business Center between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
- Provide a deposit of $75. This can be cash, check, or credit card.
- Obtain the installation disc and licensing key for the proper version of MS Office.
- Return the installation disc to the cashier’s window within 2 business days.
- Receive your $75 deposit back.
As mentioned, this method of obtaining MS Office is only available through the end of the Fall 2009 semester. After this has ended, you will be able to purchase MS Office 2007 Enterprise for $69.98 plus shipping and tax.
Discounted Software
In order to meet the software needs of students while here at Olivet, we have partnered with The Hammes Bookstore and JourneyEd to provide a significant number of software titles at greatly reduced prices. This includes titles from Microsoft such as Office (both Windows and Mac), SharePoint Designer, Visio, and Windows Vista, as well as Adobe products such as Acrobat, Photoshop, and Creative Suite. Software titles from companies such as Corel, Autodesk, and Avid are also available.
In order to qualify for the discounted pricing, you must have a .edu email address. The good news is that since you are a student here at Olivet, you already meet the criteria because you have an olivet.edu email address. The first time you go through the process of purchasing any software through this program, you will be asked to provide verification that you qualify. This is achieved by creating an account on the web site mentioned below and using your Olivet email address.
As this is a new process for us, please let us know if you have any questions or experience any problems. Please be as detailed as possible regarding how you got to where you are and what it was you were trying to do. We will then assist you as best we can. You can contact the IT Help Desk at (815) 939-5302 or toll-free at (866) 400-5302 or send us an email at it@olivet.edu. If you have any questions or problems with your actual order, your first point of contact should be JourneyEd.
Purchase Process
All purchasing of software through this discount program is handled online. Once your order is confirmed it will be shipped within 1-2 business days. With the possible exception of the first few days of the school year (still to be determined), you will not be able to purchase the software at the actual bookstore located in Ludwig Center. Normally the time from ordering to receiving your purchase is about 3-5 business days.
To get to the web site and purchase software, follow one of these links:
- ONU Bookstore – Click here to go to the online bookstore site then click “Software Shop” followed by “Click here to shop for software now >>.” A new window should open up and display the JourneyEd site with the discounted pricing.
- Direct link to JourneyEd site – Click here to go directly to the JourneyEd site with the discounted pricing.
Note: It is extremely important that you use one of the two links above to get to the purchasing site. Doing so ensures that you enter the proper version of the site and see the pricing available to Olivet students. If you just go to the main JourneyEd site, you will see the same products but the pricing will not reflect our discounts. One way to make sure you are on the proper site is to go all the way down to the bottom of the JourneyEd page and look for the line “Current Source Code: MSEF207.” If you do not see this value listed then you are not operating under Olivet’s discount program. It is recommended that you close the page you are on and go to the Olivet bookstore site and follow the links mentioned above.
One way to ensure you get to the purchase site properly is to begin at the main Olivet web site. Go to www.olivet.edu and then select “Bookstore” from the Quick Links drop-down box located on the left side of the screen. From there you can follow the directions above for getting to the JourneyEd site via the Olivet bookstore site.
Software Replacement Assurance
Your software purchase comes with the media necessary to install the software as well as a product/license key. During the checkout process you will most likely be prompted to add or remove a Software Replacement Assurance plan. The Software Replacement Assurance plan is an option you can purchase that allows you to get replacement installation media at no charge for up to one year from the purchase date. If you lose your copy or it becomes damaged, you can use the replacement media and your current product/license key to reinstall the software.
Purchasing this option is completely up to you and the plan is administered completely by JourneyEd. You will not be able to obtain any replacement media directly from Olivet. The details provided by JourneyEd about this option indicate that replacement media is sent overnight.
Maintaining Your JourneyEd Purchase Account
When purchasing software through this discount program, you will be required to create an account with the JourneyEd web site. This is managed like most other online shopping sites. As mentioned above, you will be required to supply verification that you qualify for this academic discount. This can be done by providing your Olivet email address when creating the account and following whatever prompts are presented to confirm your identity. If you go longer than 12 months between any purchases on this site, you will be required to verify your qualification again.
The login information for your JourneyEd account consists of your email address and a password of your choosing. There is no default password nor is this password synchronized with any of your other Olivet passwords such as Webmail, OASIS, and Blackboard.
Anti-Virus Software
Anti-virus software is required in order to register a student computer with the Olivet network. This requirement applies to all computers regardless of the operating system (Windows, Mac OS, Linux, etc.).
AVAST can be installed and used on any student computer as versions are available for the operating systems listed above. It is free and can be found at http://www.avast.com. Once on that site, click the "FREE Software" link to display information about the avast! Home Edition that can be downloaded to your computer. Please note that you do have to register the product within 60 days of installing in order to keep it active for up to a year.
Windows users may choose to use a product called AVG Free. It is free and can be found at http://free.avg.com. Once at that site you will see a tab labeled "Get basic protection." This tab will present you with a comparison of the versions of AVG that are available and also provide a link to download the software.
Mac OS users may also choose to use a product called ClamXav. This is a free anti-virus tool for Macs and can be found at http://www.clamxav.com. There is a "Download Page" link towards the top of the page which takes you to a page to download the version of ClamXav that is appropriate for the version of Mac OS you are running.
Notes:
- Other anti-virus programs and security suites may be used. However, you are responsible for any licensing and/or maintenance fees that may occur.
- While products from McAfee and Symantec can be used while connected to the Olivet network, we have experienced some compatibility issues with these products. Most likely you will need to disable the product during the computer registration process and then enable it again once registration is complete.
- Make sure you are running a full and complete version of an anti-virus program. Most new computers come with some kind of security suite but it is likely a trial version which generally expires after 30-90 days if you do not choose to pay for the licensing.
- Do not install more than one anti-virus program on your computer. Most anti-virus programs detect other anti-virus programs as potential problems and trying to run more than one program will most likely cause your computer to run very slow and possibly cause it to crash. If you want to switch from one anti-virus program to another, you should completely uninstall the current program before attempting to install the new one.
